We finally made it to Hiva Oa!

Yesterday morning we finally made landfall in Atuona Bay on the island of Hiva Oa! It was a beautiful sight to approach the emerald green mountainous island after so long at sea.  We spent our first day cleaning the boat since it had become quite the disaster area from the constant motion of the swells. Some areas ended up growing a lot more mildew and mold than we anticipated, such as a lot of the wood in our head. Anyway, after getting the boat more or less clean, we went to shore and enjoyed a nice long shower at an outdoor shower set up by the dinghy landing. It was wonderful.

Today we are exploring the main town of Atuona. We are still waiting to connect with our agent so we can check in, but the officials here don't seem to mind that we don't do it right away. We found the bank with atm, and a grocery store where we scored a couple cucmbers, some potatoes and some delicious, crusty baguettes and a baguette sandwich. Then we walked up a nearby hill to the local cemetary where the artist Paul Gaugin and a famous Belgian singer, Jacque Briel are buried. The view from the cemetary is gorgeous and we enjoyed a nice picnic in the shade of a large hibiscus bush and some plumeria trees overlooking the town.

Anyway, we will write more later, but just wanted to let everyone know we made it just fine and are thoroughly enjoying being on land again!
